Episode 03: Does UI/UX Matter?

A topic that is constantly debated between the two of us – does user interface (UI) and user experience (UX) really matter in India? Anytime this topic comes up, one website is mentioned by default – Cleartrip.com. The travel portal hands down is the best designed travel portal in India and arguably worldwide.  We also talk about Tenmiles which runs HelpDesk Pilot, DoAttend and several other sites.

Skype was used for this episode and the audio levels were off. It sounds like Sahil was screaming and Manish was whispering…which oddly is the reverse of what happens in person.

Good design really does matter. Glad you took this topic up for discussion.

As a person who enjoys good design I would not stay on a badly designed websites for more than 10 seconds. But clearly, their target audience are not people like me. Their audience are people who’s purpose is to get information with or without a clean interface. As long as people could do this, the site was doing it’s job for them.

Also as you mention, some people are really used to the blinking text / marquee’s and a busy interface. Busy works for some people.

I think bad designs will evolve over time. As people use badly designed application / website more often vs coming across nice / clean interface, they will start to loose interest in the badly designed product. If the UI is hard to use or makes people think, they will leave and move on to the next website / application which does not “make them think” and has a better UI.
